About_guitarist.jpg

Bob Hall knew he wanted to become a musician and enter a music college since he was 15. But while in high school he left home, teaching guitar as a source of income. He performed solo (chord solos) and with Pittsburgh bands in the 1970s.  Initially, Bob deferred his desire to attend a music college based on lack of finances, but after playing in a band in which all members were older and had attended Duquesne University Music School, he applied to received scholarships and financial aid to attend. In the 80s, he took a detour from jazz, rock, and blues to lead a band playing his compositions (getting away from hot guitar solos that were so prominent in the 70s). At this time, there were few venues for bands playing their own music, so his band, Kids After Dark, would travel to other cities in nearby states. Kids After Dark was a prominent band in the Pittsburgh area, and it later relocated to New York City. During the 80s, Hall has shared the billing with such acts as Psychedelic Furs, Modern English, Thompson Twins, Black Flag, R.E.M., OMD, Vernon Reid, Living Colour, and many, many others. He has also appeared in movie, radio, and TV appearances and a nationwide tour. In the 1990s, Hall left the stage to pursue a master’s degree in music composition (Hunter College) and a doctorate in music theory (CUNY Graduate Center). During this time, Hall veered toward atonal music compositions for guitar or orchestra. After five years of grad school, Hall left the theory program to devote 20 years to public education in NYC. Now he records and hosts music sessions with other jazz enthusiasts in NYC, PA, and BCN.
